I am appalled that this book received the amount of positive reviews that it did. Seriously. I was not impressed. At all.

What was this? A first draft? An idea? A thought put to paper and then someone decided 'oh! I can sell this on the web!' I mean come on. If I hadn't bought this for $.99 I would have stopped reading it altogether.

It was sorely lacking in the details and writing skills department. My 17 year old sister could have done this in her sleep. It was repetitive and boring and the final moments? Just go look at my status updates. Pitiful. I don't know what anyone saw in this. I didn't even get any entertainment value out of it. Carley was plotless. Nick was cliche. Samuel was nonexistent. Holt was obvious. Autumn? Pointless. Boring. And stale. God it was like driving little sewing needles in my toes. Slowly.

I wasted my time reading this book for a plot that was used before. And this doesn't really matter if it would have been presented in any way that would be remotely enticing. It was not.

It needed an editor. Real bad. By the end of the book there were more typos than my rough drafts of fanfictions. Choppy sentences. No structure. Just. Bad.

The only way I will consider reading the next one is if it is free and I have some free time I feel like wasting. Otherwise I would bypass this one like a dead possum on the side of the road.

I was approved for a review copy of this book after signing up through the review opportunities at Xpresso Book Tours, however, the book is also currently free on Amazon if you are interested.

I'd like to start my review off by stating that I did like this book but I wish it was a standalone. It was an easy summer read,

even though I've read it in the middle of winter , and I think it could have been perfectly written in one longer book or if not, it still shouldn't be cut in so many pieces.
The book is about fairies and a girl who learns that she is destined to be one. It put me into such a summer mood, as it had everything there is to a perfect summer (to me at least). I loved the world, although I think it could have been more detailed and unique, it goes for the magic too, it just could have been done way better. Another problem I had was the editing, I mean the lack of it. English is my second language and even I found many typos. Also, I found this so repetitive, I mean I understand that Autumn was thinking about the same things over and over, but it was unnecessary to write down all of it, without repetition this book could be like half the length.

I'm not a fan of love-triangles, but this book didn't even have one, so I don't know what all these people talk about.. Or it might be only me, who doesn't consider this a love-triangle because Samuel and Autumn didn't even love each other.
Another thought I had was that at the beginning I was so happy that Autumn was one of those cool female characters, who wouldn't fall head over heels for a guy in like two seconds.. Yeah.. Well she needed three..

I could ramble about the whole (view spoiler)[marrige (hide spoiler)] thing as well, I mean (view spoiler)[she's 16 and it doesn't even bother her, that she has to marry one of them? Ok, they are hot, and princes and whatever, but she's known them for a week.. Gonna stop here, 'cause I could go on forever. (hide spoiler)]

I feel like I should highlight the positivites too, because this review is turning too negative, even though I kinda liked this book. It was easy to read, fast paced and it somehow grabbed me. So, despite all the issues I had with this book I might read the following ones in the series, because I'm still interested in the story and need to know more. I'd love to read about Carly and Nick admitting their love for each other, and many more things in connection with fairies etc. I felt like the ending was cut down and a lot more stuff could be put into this book (maybe to the place of all those repetitive actions and thoughts?)...
I gave it 3 stars because of it being fast-paced and let's not forget about that perfect summer mood it put me in.

Well the idea was good, that is pretty much the only positive thing I can say about this book.

I didn't like Autumn. In the beginning she had promise of being a decent main character. Enter Holt, and the decency crumbles. He liked her because she didn't stare...but then she just ended up a gooey, sticky, can't remove my mind from you, mess. She was shallow, rather self absorbed, extremely thoughtless, and down right weak.

The only variation in this book that was new was that Samuel didn't want her. He might have been destined to be with her, but he didn't want her. Bravo, there was nothing about her to want.

I started off having a problem with the age difference because it just screams pedophile to me. A 15 year old looks like a child. But then I recalled most of the books in this genre have the love interest being centuries old, so I let it slide.

I really didn't like Carley at all. She is a horrid friend and has no redeeming qualities about her to even make her useful to the story.

I questioned why Logan, a fellow 16 year old, acted more like he was 12. If this was an attempt to make Autumn seem more mature, it failed miserably.

Another thing that bothered me was that you only ever heard about how Samuel felt from everyone else's perspective. You never actually got anything from him. And I don't know, but most women, if they are being ignored, are more attracted to the guy who is ignoring them. We are like cats. Yes, it might upset us, but it only makes us more determined. Which Autumn displays after Holt tells her he can't see her anymore...so uh?
But, I felt that Samuel was a wasted character. Autumn never actually gave him a chance, not even once she knew she was supposedly destined to be with him. And he kind of just popped in and then disappeared for the majority of the book. All of the drama surrounding him actually excluded him.
As for the drama it was all incredibly petty. This wasn't a gripping page turner. In fact, it felt more like a design for a story rather than a finished story. I was left rather disappointed.
On the plus side though, I found out through reading this that I really hate the word "simpering".

Autumn is the perfect name for the main character of this book. I really like how throughout the story Autumn has kept being herself & doing what she wanted to do even though the easy path was deny her feelings & do what others wanted her to. Autumn is stronger than she realizes. In the beginning of the story Autumn does not see it. She is worried about her parents marriage & now the 2 boys fighting over her. But Autumn becomes aware of her strength as the story progresses. I am not in love with Autumn is the perfect name for the main character of this book. Autumn is stronger than she realizes. In the beginning of the story Autumn does not see it. She is worried about her parents marriage & now the 2 boys fighting over her. But Autumn becomes aware of her strength as the story progresses. I am not in love with Carely. She seems very self envolved & that the world needs to revolve around her. She is jealous that 2 boys are interested in her friend & not her when she should be happy for Autumn instead of saying "why not me". I think that is how Maddy Edwards wants us to feel about Carely. Nick is a puppy dog, but you love him anyway. Nick is hopelessly in love with Carely but Carely does not see it. I think that Carely has feelings for him as well but does not want to admit them. Nick & Carely are not ready for that kind of relationship just yet so friends it is for now.

***Spolier Alert***
Holt the Summer Fairy Prince - I love him & want Autumn to be with him not just because he is sweet, strong & caring but because his family is as well. I would think of the Summer prince as a Light Fae if you read other Fae stories.

Samuel the Winter Fairy Prince - Like him more towards the end of the story. I would think of the Winter prince as a Dark fae or maybe a nuteral fae. You dislike his family even though you like Samuel & feel that if his family would just leave Autumn, Holt & Samuel alone that what is supposed to be will be. Samuel's family making threats to Autumn for seeing Holt just tells you that they are scared & feel threatened themselves. Perhaps scared that Autumn might choose to be with Holt over Samuel. Which makes you wonder is Autumn really destined for Samuel? Or because Autumn feels an attraction towards both Holt & Samuel that maybe destiny is not really written yet & there is a choice. I like to think that Autumn's path is not written & she will be able to choose without the interaction of either families. I doubt this will be the case.

I will be purchasing the 2nd book to continue Autumn's story & see what will happen next with the 2 princes.

Fiesty, stubborn, brave and fiercely independent it was excellent and refreshing to come across a YA heroine who continues to remain strong despite her supernatural bond to the two male protagonists. Speaking of which… I find myself in the unusual position of being completely on the fence: Holt or Samuel?! I don't know! They're both yummy. Mmm.

I honestly couldn't have cared less about the characters. Samuel had no reason to be cold towards her in the very first place and the author never explained why he didn't touch her anyway?!!

I just found this book really annoying to read 😤

I bought this book because it was recommended to me on BoobBub at $0.99. The storyline sounded interesting, so I thought why not.

I'm not disappointed that I read this book, but I am left with mixed feelings.

There were aspects I liked. The way the flowers responded to the summer fairies, the fantastic descriptions of the town Castleton (I felt like I was there, I could almost smell the salt on the breeze).

But the rest of it? Just plain baffling, ridiculous and annoying.

But the rest of it? Just plain baffling, ridiculous and annoying.

Autumn seemed to be a girl who didn't swoon over the first hot guy to give her the time of day. But wait, we just needed to wait a couple of days, and boom! Instalove.

The other 'love interest' was basically non existent. I kept waiting to get more insight into his behavior, but it never came.

Autumn's supposed best friend Carley? Yeah, no, not for me.

Autumn was completely self absorbed most of the book, so honestly she wasn't a great friend either. And argh! The angst about her parents fighting. Seriously she managed to slip it into most of the conversations throughout the book, yet no one asked her about it.

The fact that she is 16, and staying for the summer at her 16yr old friends house, whose parents conveniently happen to be away in London for half the summer. Yeah, right.

The fact that Autumn is 16, and both her love interests are 22. That's just creepy. Honestly I don't know why the author didn't just write Autumn as an 18 yr old.

Anyway that's enough ranting for me.

I was going to continue with the series, just because I was hoping that Samuel would have more of a part to play in upcoming books, but after reading some reviews that doesn't seem to be the case. So I've decided I won't bother.

My opinion seems to be quite unpopular though, so if you want to read it, don't let my review deter you...

During her stay in Maine, she comes across Holt Roth and Samuel Cheshire, and she feels attracted to both of them-but on different levels. Even though Autumn decides Holt is the one for her, Fate has different plans.
I started reading this book with mixed feelings. I wasn't sure how the storyline would go, but I felt pretty sure Autumn would be an on-point character. The first few pages made her out to be this girl who has her awkward moments, but isn't boy crazy. I was deceived. Within the first few days of her meeting Holt, she becomes lovesick for him. She has the same feelings for Samuel, but she chooses to ignore them because he doesn't seem to like her. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of Autumn; and for various reasons:
1. She starts out as too nosy. She can tell there's some unusual stuff going on with the Roths and the Cheshires. As far as she knows, the beef between the two families doesn't directly involve her. Somehow, she makes it her business and won't stop nagging until she's in on the gist.
2. She's conveniently self-absorbed. When I say conveniently, I mean that the only time she's not self-absorbed is when her generosity or consideration will somehow benefit the story.
3. She's rather petty and all her actions seem like overreactions. She's sixteen years old and acts like she's much younger.
4. Even though she fancies herself in love with Holt, she's aware of her "heart thumping" reactions to Samuel but chooses to ignore them. (After all, in the grand scheme of love, heart thumping is nothing serious).
But the problem doesn't lie solely with Autumn. The whole characterization is quite faulty in the sense that I felt no connection with any of the characters. Also, I don't understand why Samuel's family is so worried about Autumn going against destiny. I'm no fate expert, but I think that if something is fated to be, there's no need fighting for it to happen; fate has already decided. It is quite ironic that everyone is fighting for Autumn's future when she's just in Maine for vacation.
One Black Rose is a story I feel would have been better if it wasn't so character driven. And the fact that the main character who drives the story is an irritating sort just makes matters worse.

P.S. It seems my opinion of this book is unpopular, so don't be so discouraged if you really want to read it.

This was a good romance for teens. The characters can sense what other characters are feeling and respond accordingly. There is even a bit of danger and intrigue to the story. Another aspect shown through Autumn's friend, Carley. She has been friends with Nick for years and completely oblivious to Nick's more than friends feelings for her.

I'm not a huge fairy fan, but I LOVED this book. I'm a sucker for a great love triangle I guess! Poor Autumn never had a chance with Samuel and Holt around. From the moment she stepped off the plane in Maine, she was destined for a new life.

I wasn't a huge Carley fan, she was selfish and petulant. I did admire Nick's persistence at trying to win her affections though. Lydia and Leslie were great characters, and I could imagine them as if they were in the room with me. They give me the chills..ha

Autumn is thrown head first into a new world where she is torn between duty and love. One wrong choice could lead to the fate of the all the fairies. It doesn't help that Samuel and Holt are both sexy as all heck!

This was a great paranormal romance and I loved it. For a YA fairy book, it rates five glittery stars in my book!

-What was Holt doing at the airport? HE showed up there with no real purpose, saves Autumn and drives her back home. And what was Carley's reaction to him anyway? This part was all weird and not really clear.

-Autumn's meeting with Susan felt awefully familiar.. if I remember correctly, it reminded me of a certain Bella and Alice meeting (it has been a while since I attempted to read twilight, but it still felt similar to me). I see a lot of similarities with Twilight, but at the same time, it is not really the same. I guess it feels more like a tribute to some elements.

Overall, I liked the writing style, the world building and the characters.

Things go from fun loving to complications with these two boys and their families. When Autumn learns their real secret. It becomes crazy because it puts one family against another. The concept of the book was good, but the delivery was lacking in depth. Autumn is visiting her best friend in Maine for the summer and meets up with two very different boys. One seems drawn to her but won't touch her, and the other seems to hate her. There's a deeper battle going on - one of the fae courts.

Some of my issues: Carley, Autumn's, needed fleshing out and to be made more likeable. Surely there was something non-self focused in her! There are many typos and grammatical inconsistencies

Some more editing would have improved the book as my reading slowed as I had to figure out some of the more egregious typos/word substitutions.
More character development for the characters would better show some of the choices they made.

I'm still deciding if I want to continue the series - I'm rather on the fence.

The first star is because, even though the writing, plot, and characters were mostly terrible, this was an easy read that I think may have finally gotten me back in my reading zone. The second star is because for some reason I can't fathom, I liked Samuel. He was the only character I could muster up some form of attachement to, and it's mostly because I was able to form my own idea in my head of what he was like, seeing as he had little page time. I won't even get into how forced the Holt/Autumn The first star is because, even though the writing, plot, and characters were mostly terrible, this was an easy read that I think may have finally gotten me back in my reading zone. I found the premise of the story, a girl caught between two competing guys, plausible and enjoyable, however I was bothered by the writing. At times I felt that it was a bit labored with unnecessary details thrown in. I also feel that the author took way to long to get to the point where the main character finds out what's going on. To me it seemed like she was prolonging the story so she would have something to write in a Book 2. An enjoyable read but not a series which I'll likely continue wit I found the premise of the story, a girl caught between two competing guys, plausible and enjoyable, however I was bothered by the writing. I loved the story idea... once I discovered it. I feel like the first 2/3 of the book were talking in circles. I often found myself getting mad at the main character, and Samuel was the only decent character, the rest were not well developed. It felt scattered and disorganized. I would like to know how the story continues, but I first want an editor. All the things that frustrated me would be fixable with sufficient editing.

I'll be honest. When I read the blurb it sounded really good. I enjoyed the beginning and thought this might actually turn out better than expected.
I just finished it and I'm sad to say I am not as happy with the outcome. The storyline itself had so much potential, and it was a strong idea, but the writing felt so rushed and I couldn't enjoy it. I felt I couldn't connect with the characters and it didn't feel real to me.

Unfulfilled

I normally don't write bad reviews. But I feel like this story was a great concept that completely missed it. The drama was boring and the love triangle the author went for was just kind of lame. It was more of a one sided love that felt wrong. Where was the other side. It could have been an epic love story for a boy and girl who grew to love the boy. Not Insta love that just fell flat.

A little dumb, but hey, fairies. Towards the end all I could hear was Two Princes by the Spin Doctors ringing in my ears. When the last girl your crush straight up died, you in danger gurl.

Top Quotes:

"I mean, I can see you think it's bad, but why is it bad?"

"Damn these polite Fairies and their turn-taking."

ok faeries and majic, young unrequited love and some who should know better. Imagine trying to tell someone who they could love. Any way I found this to be along the same lines as the twilight series and after reading the blogs of the next few books I am going to give them a miss sorry

I liked the idea of the summer and winter court princes needing to find brides to produce heirs and such. But that was really it. Autumn was a weirdo and she and Carly were probably the worst friends ever. Also the fact that she read as a 13 year old and the boys seemed like they were in their twenties was gross. This was too much teenage angst and not enough fairy court drama.

An enjoyable read

I really enjoyed this book.
I can't wait to see where things lead from here….
A different view on fairies and how they live….and an interesting twist of fate where what should happen and how it actually is are quite different ….
Even a bit of action is thrown into the drama….
Truly an enjoyable read….

It's not really urban, so much as modern-small-town fantasy, but I don't feel like making that its own category. This had some fun characters and an interesting storyline--a little suspense, a little romance, some fae at each other's throats--good stuff. Interesting and different but very good!

This was really different from what I normally read, but it was really good and kept me from from putting it down! Might need the rest of the series!

A story somewhat set to the lyrics of "Love Stinks"

Different take on the Summer and Winter courts. Found it amusing that the main character is named Autumn. Really liked the storyline.
